About Me

Susan Stern is a Professor of ESL at Irvine Valley College, where she has enjoyed teaching all levels of ESL since 1990. Before that she was a Lecturer in ESL at the University of California, Irvine teaching. She holds a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles, where she also taught a variety of ESL classes.

Her primary research interests are the teaching of literature in ESL and the use of role-play and drama in second language learning, and she has made numerous presentations on literature and drama at TESOL, CATESOL, and other conferences for local and international groups of teachers. She has also authored a number of articles and book chapters in these areas. She includes some kind of literature (stories, poems, plays) and dramatic activities in practically every class she teaches to inspire students to read, write, and speak in English, and to help make language learning exciting, enjoyable, and fun!

She loves teaching ESL at IVC because it gives her the opportunity to teach all levels of ESL, all kinds of ESL classes, and especially, because of the wonderful students! She enjoys meeting and getting to know students of all ages from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. Traveling has always been one of her passions, and she has traveled to Europe, Israel, Mexico, Canada, and throughout the United States. Her other passion is art. She loves drawing and painting, both studio art (especially figurative art ) and painting landscapes outdoors (plein air), and attends art exhibits and festivals whenever she can. She is also fascinated by clothing and style (and was a costume designer for a few years). She also enjoys attending music, theater and film events, trying interesting foods, reading, exercising, and spending time outdoors in nature.
