AESL (Adult English as a Second Language) classes provide English and American culture lessons to help students at work and school, with their family, and in society. These are non-credit classes, which means students only pay for parking, a health fee and class materials. Topics may include:

  • Interviewing for a job
  • Conferencing with a child's teacher
  • Filling out forms and applications
  • Writing personal or professional emails
  • Reading prescription labels and medication directions
  • Learning about U.S. culture and government

AESL students will practice their English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in class while learning about English grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary. Students also learn about U.S. culture and government and improve their computer skills by using English learning software in a computer lab one day a week.

Classes are 12 hours a week (usually 3 hours a day, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and meet in the morning, afternoon, or evening.  We have five levels of classes from beginning to advanced.

Students can also earn IVC English certificates of competency by completing a course sequence at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level.

F-1 visa students: Irvine Valley College is not authorized to issue an I-20 visa for full-time ESL study only. Part-time or concurrent enrollment may be allowed for students holding a valid F-1 visa. Please contact the International Student Center for more information about taking ESL classes at IVC.
