Challenging a Course
How to Challenge a Course in the Chinese Program
If you have not fulfilled the prerequisite for a Chinese course but think you might be able to do the work, you may ask to challenge the prerequisite. This does not earn you any units, but merely waives the prerequisite. To fill out the challenge form, go to the Assessment and Matriculation Office in the Student Services Center, room SSC 250; phone number (949) 451-5315.
You will be provisionally enrolled in the course you wish to be in and will be asked to write a 1to 2 pages essay in Chinese characters. Members of the evaluating committee are looking for depth of vocabulary and good use of sentence patterns. Your request to waive the prerequisite will be either approved or rejected within five working days.
